Case Study: Climate Change Complicates Dengue Fever Prevention in Can Tho, Vietnam

This case study illustrates how local level education and a focus on prevention can have powerful effects in reducing the prevalence of Dengue. Can Tho is a growing city with an increasing number of residents living in ?peri-urban areas. These areas have a lot of open space and limited public health infrastructure. With increasing average temperatures and rainfall outside the rainy season, Dengue has been becoming more common throughout the year in Can Tho. This case study provides an overview of a project that has promising results, including a decrease of dengue cases in the target wards or Can Tho, and an increase in number of households clearing their property (from 32% to 90%) to reduce mosquito habitat. Both of these results indicate that education and awareness raising can lead to positive behaviour changes, empowering people to take preventative action to reduce Dengue in their local community.
