Risk in a Changing World: The Economics of Adaptation to Climate Change

in a Complex World

Program Locations: Da Nang, Vietnam; Kathmandu, Nepal
Project Duration: February 2010–October 2012
Project Lead: Ken MacClune, Senior Staff Scientist

Project Overview

This project consolidated methodologies and produced evidence on the costs and benefits of adaptation-focused disaster risk reduction as a major strategy for addressing the impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.

Core Program Activities

  • ISET-International worked with Red Cross societies in Nepal and Vietnam to undertake specific case studies on the costs and benefits of climate risk reduction in urban and rural settings. Three cases were selected for analysis:

  • Boat winches in Da Nang, Vietnam

  • Straw-bale housing in Kathmandu, Nepal

  • Local and national adaptation planning (LAPA/NAPA) in Nepal

  •  ISET-International worked with Red Cross entities to identify areas where cost-benefit techniques and the adaptation suite of methodologies could strengthen the capacity of the Red Cross movement to respond to climate change and to tailor emerging methodologies to applied contexts.

  • ISET-International worked on the dissemination of program results and the undertaking of evidence-based advocacy in key global forums such as the Conference of the Parties (COP).
