The Economics of Alternative Development Pathways: A Situation Analysis for Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang is the most dynamically developed city in Central Vietnam where economic development and urbanization are both occurring rapidly. Da Nang is also prone to typhoons, flooding and other natural hazards (i.e. drought, high tides, coastal erosion, salinization, and landslides). These hazards are likely to be exacerbated under the context of climate change. Recent rainfall event analysis completed for 2020 and 2050 show that climate change is likely to increase the intensity of moderate to severe rain events in and around Da Nang. Da Nang?s socio-economic development plan for the period of 2010?2020 does not seem to address building a resilient city to climate change. This case study explores ideas and proposes major changes to the city master plans in order to be more prepared for natural hazards and changes in climate.
