RESEARCH TEAM ON FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS

Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG)
Initiated in 2001, IORG is an academic network that aims to provide an over-arching social science, policy-focused research umbrella for the region. Founded at two locations – the Panjab University in Chandigarh (India) and the University of Western Australia in Perth – the key objective of IORG is to initiate a policy-oriented dialogue, in the true spirit of partnership, among governments, industries, NGOs and communities, towards realizing a shared, peaceful, stable and prosperous future for the Indian Ocean region.

One area of focus for IORG is environmental security. The Adaptive Strategies project is the lead water security project for IORG. Furthermore, IORG provides a framework where Adaptive Strategies activities could be expanded to Indian Ocean region. One of the two Principal Coordinators of IORG is Dr. Sanjay Chaturvedi, professor at the Centre for Study of Geopolitics at Panjab University. Eva Saroch is a PhD. candidate in political science at Panjab University. Sanjay and Eva are involved in fieldwork in the flood affected field sites for the Adaptive Strategies project and in reviewing secondary literature on government policies and laws for flood relief. This review will lead to an institutional landscape map. They are also synthesising the existing literature on floods in Bihar and Eastern U.P., and compiling a comprehensive bibliography and any maps available.

ISET-Nepal
ISET-Nepal was created in 2000 as a sister organisation to ISET to create a Nepal and South Asia base for ISET’s activities. ISET-Nepal is legally its own NGO in Nepal; however, the two organisations collaborate closely on the development of joint programs and strategies for regional and global activities. By linking the two organisations, they bring together synergies that exist between resources and capabilities available to both, and the interests of leading individuals within each of them. Many core people within ISET-Nepal are also core people in Nepal Water Conservation Foundation (NWCF). Ajaya Dixit, is Secretary of ISET-Nepal and Director of NWCF; Madhukar Upadhya, is President of ISET-Nepal and Director of Research of NWCF. Ajaya and Madhukar are leading the fieldwork for the Adaptive Strategies project in the flood affected trans-boundary areas between the Nepal Terai and northern Bihar and Eastern U.P., along the Bagmati and Rohini Rivers. ISET-Nepal is preparing a report based on fieldwork and a review of secondary data, and collecting maps and photographs to illustrate their research.

CROSS CUTTING ISSUES, GENDER PERSPECTIVES

Dr. Sara Ahmed
Essential to the fieldwork of this project to ensure consistent methodology and data collection is Dr. Ahmed’s work as a gender specialist. Dr. Ahmed trained each field crew for every project site in India and Nepal on a conceptual and methodological understanding of gender relations in the contexts of floods and droughts and how the gender perspective in development has evolved over the years to ensure that gender dimensions are taken into consideration during interviews with communities affected by floods and droughts.
